Bing for iPad Update: Searching without a search box

In April we released Bing for iPad and needless to say, we were humbled by the positive response we received. In the first three months, we had more than 5,000 ratings in the App Store and an average score of 4.7 stars (out of five stars). But what we really liked was all the great feedback on areas to improve and features to add.

Today, we’re pleased to release an update to Bing for iPad, currently available in the app store. In this release we made some improvements that you asked for and are excited to introduce a new feature called Lasso. Designed for touch-friendly devices, Lasso is a new way to search with the touch of a finger.

From our research, we know that many searches are inspired by things people see on the web. Today, it can be somewhat painful to search on a tablet when you’re engaged in reading something; just copying and pasting pieces of text from a webpage to a search box can take up to nine steps on the iPad. With Lasso you can circle and search in just two steps.

This release also includes: an improved movie experience that now lets you view multiple showtime days and theaters, the ability to swipe through the last six Bing homepage images, and hundreds of quality and performance improvements based on what we heard from you.

If you’re already using Bing for iPad, you should see an update for it in the App Store. Otherwise, you can download it here later today.

What you’re seeing today is only the beginning. Lasso moves Bing beyond the search box. Although it will only be available in Bing for iPad to begin with, we’re already thinking about how to take Lasso even further – so stay tuned.

As always, we’d love to hear what you think, so keep the feedback coming!

  1. This is awesome!! I really dig this stuff witht the finger, the name is kind of photoshop but it’s really cool!

  2. Awesome app with awesome feature…really something new…is it the same available in WP7 and Android??

  3. awesome app….really innovative….

  4. Is there a good reason why this is US only? No love for the UK/Europe?
Worldwide releases get more people talking about the products.

  5. This looks nice. Including the demo was helpful, and I’m going to give it a try now. In the future, could you consider using microphones? It was difficult to hear what you were saying.

  6. Why is it only available in us appstore?

  7. This looks cool but will it work using Google

  8. This looks great – I’d love to have a play, but I’m in the UK.

  9. Please make the app available worldwide, this is really innovative!

  10. Looks like a great app. Too bad I can’t use it since I’m in Canada…ditto what everyone else said.

  11. Awesome!

  12. I can’t wait to start using it. Hopefully it makes everything at ease like they say it does.

  13. Why is this only available in the US iTunes store? That makes no sense. The web is the web.

  14. Very nice but a suggestion… Maps are about content… Why are most road atlases large? Because people like seeing the map content. The more of it the better. It would be nice to be able to hide the sidebar and maximize map content. This comment applies to Bing maps on a regular browser on a PC or Mac.

  15. You can have that in portraid mode, why that is not enough of a trade off (the best of the two worlds)?

  16. iPad and iPhone apps are in. Windows apps are out. I am a bit “old fashioned” and stilluse Windows 7 touch tablets. I would love to see a Bing GPS tracking app for plain old Windows so that I cansee satellite imagery – something that is not possible on Mappoint. Is this possible? Hope I am not asking for too much (or too soon)

  17. Thanks for the feature request Sandeep, I will get that comment to the right team.

  18. AMAZING APP!! Beats google hands down with the birds eye in MAPS and overall (images, search results, security, ect.)

One request traffic for bing maps; for TRAFFIC show more highways, (US 422, US 222 in Berks county, PA for example, Berks county is 35-40 miles NW of Philapdelphia) and other smaller areas.

    GREAT JOB!!!!!!!!

  19. Lasso is our family top favorite feature, please make it work for images too! (we’ve 5 ipad in the house) -great work!

    • Thanks for the feedback, we’ll think about how Lasso works for images. Wow five iPads, that’s amazing.

  20. I can’t get the lasso feature to work except when the text I’m attempting to lasso is on a single line by itself.

    • Hey Mark,
Yes, we’ve found that bug too and working on an update. We’ll get that out ASAP.

  21. I wish I could add my own topics like I can with Zite.

  22. Great app! However I do have problems adding foreign stocks to the “finance” dept. of the app. – Making that possible would be a great improvement! :-)
