Bing for iPad FAQ

Thanks for your interest in Bing for iPad. Here are answers to the questions we get most.

感谢您对必应Bing for iPad的支持,中文版本的常见问题解答请往下看.

1. Why is Bing for iPad not available in my market? When will it be released in my country, region, or market?

Things such as movie showtimes, news, and trends vary from country to country so there’s some extra work that goes into each new locale. We already added zh-CN support in Bing for iPad v1.2. Definitely we will consider to support more markets in our future release.

2. What languages are supported in Bing for iPad?

Bing for iPad v1.2 is available in English and Chinese.

3. Why are my search results different from what I get on Bing.com?

Bing for iPad uses the same search logic as the Bing.com website, but the app filters out the results that aren’t optimized for the iPad. For example, iPad doesn’t support Flash, so Flash results are excluded from search results.

4. When I travel to another country, why are my search results in a different language? Can I change this back to English?

When traveling outside the United States, Bing for iPad uses the IP address to determine your location and default to the local language. When traveling outside the United States, Bing for iPad uses the IP address to determine your location and default to the local language. To ensure that your searches always appear in English, download the updated version (v1.2) of Bing for iPad.

5. When I launch Bing for iPad how do I get back to where I was the last time I used it?

Bing for iPad always opens to the home page. To return to where you were the last time you used it, tap the orange icon  stack button at the top near the searchbox.

6. What does the Trends module show me?

Trends show the top searches in the Bing network after editors remove inappropriate searches. It’s a quick way to see what’s happening in the world today, and a tap on one of the trends starts a search on that topic. This feature currently is only for en-US.

7. How do I close the browser window?

We have designed Bing for iPad as a layered panel system that you can navigate by swiping. Consider each browser window a panel and all the pages that you navigated to within each browser window a unit. To close the browser window, you can navigate away by swiping back or forth or by doing another search. To close all of the panels at the same time, go to Settings and tap Clear search history

8. What does the Pen icon do?

The highlighter highlighter button helps you find your search term in the content. For example, let’s say you searched for “London” and tapped one of the results. You could then tap the highlight icon to quickly show all mentions of “London” on the site.

9. What is the circle icon?

Lasso lasso button is a new feature we’ve introduced in v1.1. Tap the icon, and then use your finger to circle any text on the page. The selected text automatically starts a new web search. Try it out and tell us what you think!

In Bing for iPad, go to settings and look for the “Make Bing your default search” link near the bottom of the page. Alternatively, in the iPad device settings you can navigate to the Safari page and at there you can choose your search engine.

  1. The news teaser at the bottom of the bing app offers a story blurb, but when I click on the blurb, though dozens of stories summaries are offered, the story that was teased is nowhere to be found. What’s up with that?

  2. Why is the background of Bing on my IPad always the same? How can I change it?

    • It should change and if it doesn’t you can do two things:
      - place a search using any keywords, if that works contact our support team (the button for support is in iTunes)
      - delete and reinstall the app (this is the lamest way to make sure that during the download of the upgrade something did go wrong)

Always check if you have connection first and then check if the map gives you current location properly.

      hope this helps – Mario

      • The background image failed to refresh a few weeks after the original install. I have deleted the app and restarted the device. Now, each time I download and install the Bing for iPad app the background image is a static picture of a jellyfish with no overlay providing additional info about the image using touch sensitive spots. On a rare occasion the app installed correctly, allowing me to swipe through background images from previous days, refreshed once for the next day and failed to refresh thereafter. I have deleted the app, reinstalled it and have been welcomed back by the pretty picture of a jellyfish. —Please advise.

Otherwise a well crafted app …Great work.

        Sean

        • Glad you like the app. Sorry to hear about the home page image issue. We haven’t run into this before. I suspect it’s related to network settings but we’ll need more investigation to confirm.
          Hua

          • I’m also having same problem. every day I’m seeing the beautiful jelly fish.

          • Hi Chris,
Not getting the homepage image would indicate a network problem. I would first confirm that you’re connected to the internet and that should allow the app to get the homepage image of the day.

          • Thank you for your answer.
But I have no problem to use Internet with my iPad.

So it looks homepage image issue is not related with network.
By the way, I’m living in Korea. Do you think it would work correctly in USA only?

  3. Why the heck
    1. Many pictures above the news stories have NOTHING yo do with the story
    2. I want the suggested stories by time, not one 2 hours ago, the next 3 days ago, then 1 day, then 12 hours. I want them in order from latest!!!

  4. Is it possible to login like you do on our computers? …so that we can earn Bing points to use towards rewards. I don’t see a login, but thought I would ask. Can you consider adding this to a future release? Thanks.

    • Hi,
There is no way to do that now in Bing for iPad. We know about Bing rewards and have talked about this with that team. Nothing to announce just yet.

      • This is an important tie-in feature to help keep me in the Bing experience across all of the platforms that I use; hopefully, it will soon be a part of the app.

  5. Can I sign in and view “my places” in the iPad app?

    • Hello,
I’m not exactly clear what you mean by “my places”; but we allow saving cities in the Weather panel, that doesn’t require signing in, but it also does not roam. We’re definitely thinking about how that might be shared down the road.

  6. Why are there photos above the news stories that have nothing to do with the stories?

    • Hi Jana,
Yes, that’s a known issue we’ve been dealing with. We’re working on a fix to keep the images and the article in synch.

  7. Why is there no sports section? Or is it there and I’m missing it?

    • Hey Mark,
Sorry, no Sports yet. We’re working on getting more of those areas into the app as soon as possible.

  8. Help. how do I bookmark a favorite on Bing for IPad ? I don’t want to use safari. Thanks and hurry please.

    • Hi Linda,
Very sorry to say that we’re not able to support that in our current app model. It’s a common request and we’re definately thinking about the right way to do that.

  9. Hi, how do I ‘login’ so that my searches contribute to my bing rewards account? Thanks

    • Hi,
The Bing for iPad app doesn’t have rewards support build in yet. We’ve got that in the future plan. For now you can use Bing as your search default in Safari and it will work.

  10. I am having regular crashes in using the Bing for IPad search engine. Any suggestions regarding a fix?

    • Charles,
Sorry to hear about the problems. Please go to the settings panel and use the customer support link. Let them know what’s going on and hopefully then can help out.

  11. I log into my bing webpage but it never remembers me and I just relogin every time. Also cox is my ISP and bing thinks I am in providence RI. I cannot change it as it keeps saying it can’t find me. Yet if I put my zip code it it list my correct city till I tell it to save it, then I just do not exist.

    No biggie love bing !!

    Go Microsoft !!

    • Tom,
In V1.1 we’ve not built in support for remembering login – sorry. That’s on our list of future items to do. I’m perplexed by the location bug, the iPad should automatically inform our app where you are. I’m not sure why your ISP is interfering with that and it sounds like you’re using a web page that uses reverse IP look-up and not the GPS signal on the device.

  12. is there another way to close pages in the app, other than clearing the history?

  13. How do I edit weather locations – reorder, delete, etc?

    • Hi Sara,
You can remove weather locations on the left rail by doing a swipe gesture on the item. It works basically like deleting an email on the iPad. There’s no sorting function for this yet.

  14. Bing for iPad does not allow me to print after I do a search? The functionality found in Safari does not seem to follow when Bing takes over following a search.

    Am i missing something?

  15. Why no Word app for IPad 2? Or, Zune software? That would be fantastic.

  16. Can you please consider adding the ability to easily translate web pages. I can translate with Bing in Safari, but there’s issues scrolling on web pages, so I can only read like the first few paragraphs.

I figured I would try the Bing App, and “Translate this Page” appears in the search result, but isn’t clickable. Aside form that I don’t see other options.

Thanks, and thank you to iPad Bing team for all the hard work!!

    • Carlos,
Thanks for the idea on translate. We’ll put that into the feature list for an upcoming release. Thanks for your support of the app.
      Eric

  17. Love the app but is there a way to bookmark pages and how do you customize your homepage?

    • Hi James,
This is often requested however there is no way in the current design to create a favorite or a bookmark. We’ll keep looking into the request and see if we can find a good solution for the app.
      Thanks,
      Eric

  18. How can I get my home location for the weather on the home page of my ipad

  19. I was using Bing maps on my Ipad for about a year – loaded all my clients into “my places” and now for some reason when I go to bing maps “my places” does not show up – I went to Apple yesterday and they said it must be something in Bing Maps that changed. I went to Best Buy as I was going to get a Blackberry Playbook as I thought maybe it was just Safari. But “my places” will not show up on the Playbook either.

What gives – I was using this tool weekly and loved it – spent hours mapping all this out and it’s very disappointing that it’s not working anymore – we tried it on a MAC desktop and it was fine – today I tried it on the Galaxy 10.1 and it shows up on the Galaxy Android but I really don’t want to spend $650.00 to just use this tool and find out 6 months down the road it doesn’t work there either. HELP! Bing maps “my places” is the best tool out there for salespeople but it needs to work on Ipads/Playbooks!

  20. Any word yet as to when the bing rewards feature will be added? I like the ap as I’m always using my iPad but could use the rewards feature as I do a lot of searching and such

    • I woul like to know this too.

  21. I would like to ask the developers to consider adding two features to the Bing Maps section of your iPad app. One is the inclusion of a GPS coordinates display option. My preference would be to have this feature implemented in exactly the same way as does the Google Earth for iPad app.

The second additional feature is also directed at Bing Maps and is the option of displaying a crosshair mark to visually indicate and correspond with the map’s currently displayed GPS coordinates.

You can see a similar crosshair feature implemented at http://www.flashearth.com/.

  22. How do I access my places from iPad & be able to draw on maps?

  23. wow your post is so useful for me.i like your post, keep it.thanks

  24. Although venues such as Mall of America show up on maps.bing.com, they do not show up on Bing for IPad app. It would be great if Microsoft supported venue maps on the Bing App as well.

  25. Where is barcode scanning and Bing Vision on an iPad 3 with Bing.com or any Bing App?

  26. Spyder,
This is often requested however there is no way in the current design to create a favorite or a bookmark. We’ll keep looking into the request and see if there is a good solution in the app.
    Thanks,
    Eric
